Linear Access Control Installation: The Orlando Owner’s Guide

We install Linear access control systems in Orlando every week, and the installed price typically runs between $850 and $2,400 depending on whether you’re replacing a failed board, adding a keypad or card reader, or building out a full telephone entry system at the gate. Most parts we stock on the truck, so a straightforward Linear access control swap is usually done in a single visit. You’ll know the price before we touch anything. If your keypad stopped lighting up, the call box has gone silent at the gate, or your Linear controller won’t release the lock, you’re in the right place.

Here’s what we see most often in the Orlando area: humidity gets into the keypad housing, corrosion eats at the ribbon connectors inside the Linear controller, and suddenly the code that worked for three years doesn’t do anything. Or the system works fine at the keypad but won’t trip the gate operator anymore. Either way, the fix is almost always faster than owners expect once the right part is in hand.

Which Linear Models This Applies To

We service and install access control across the Linear product lines most common in Orlando’s residential and small commercial gates: the AE series telephone entry systems (AE-100, AE-200, AE-500), the AM/AP keypad lines, and the older RE-1 and RE-2 receivers still running on hundreds of gates around the city. Linear access control parts are broadly cross-compatible within their generation, but there’s a gotcha worth knowing: a Linear AE-1000 keypad will not talk to an older RE-1 receiver without a retrofit board, and mixing generations without checking controller firmware is the fastest way to double your parts cost.

When we arrive at a Linear access control job in Orlando, we verify the exact model number on the board itself, not just the housing. The housing may say Linear on the outside while a previous tech swapped in a different manufacturer’s board inside. For OEM versus aftermarket: Linear OEM boards and keypads are what we recommend for anything tied to a callbox or a system that multiple families use. For a simple standalone keypad on a single-family gate, a quality aftermarket equivalent like a DoorKing 1812 or an Elite keypad often does the job for less, and we’ll tell you honestly which makes sense before you spend a dollar.

Warden Gate Repair Orlando is an independent service provider. We’re not affiliated with Linear, but we’ve been installing and repairing their equipment across Central Florida long enough to know which boards hold up and which ones the humidity destroys.

Signs Your Linear Access Control Installation Is Failing

  • Keypad lights but the gate won’t open. This usually points to a dead relay on the Linear controller board or a broken wire between the keypad and the gate operator. The relay is what actually tells the motor to move, and it fails before the keypad does.
  • The call box rings but nobody can hear anything on either end. In Orlando, this is almost always corrosion on the phone line connectors or a failed audio chip inside the Linear AE series board. Humidity is brutal on these, especially on gates that face east and get morning condensation.
  • You enter the code and hear a click, but nothing happens at the gate. The click means the controller is working. The problem is downstream: a failed control wire run, a bad operator input terminal, or a blown fuse on the operator side. This is a wiring diagnosis job, not a board replacement.
  • Some codes work and others don’t. The memory chip on older Linear boards can partially fail, dropping certain code slots. We’ve seen this on AE-100 units that are 8 to 10 years old. It starts intermittent and gets worse.
  • The keypad display is blank or shows gibberish. On newer Linear models with an LCD, this can be a failing voltage regulator. On older LED units, it’s usually moisture behind the faceplate. Either way, it’s the early warning before total failure, and catching it early usually means a cheaper repair.

Replacement Cost & What’s Included

In Orlando, a Linear access control board replacement typically lands between $350 and $800 installed, including the part, labor, and a written warranty. A complete keypad or card reader swap runs $400 to $900. A full telephone entry system replacement, where we’re swapping the whole callbox and controller, runs $1,500 to $2,800 depending on the model and whether the buried wire needs replacement.

What drives the range is honestly two things: which Linear generation you have and the condition of the wire between the keypad and the gate operator. Old wire that’s been underground for 15 years in Florida soil is often the hidden cost. We quote the price before any work starts, and it includes everything: the part, the labor, the programming, and the testing. No surprise line items at the end. Our 365-Day Done Right Promise applies to every Linear access control install we do, so if something fails within the year, the return visit is free.

DIY or Call Us?

There are a few things you can check safely before you call. Make sure the keypad has power. Check the breaker. Look at the keypad face for obvious water intrusion or cracked housing. If a single wire has pulled loose at a clearly visible, low-voltage terminal and you’re comfortable re-seating it, that’s your call. Access control wiring is low voltage, which makes it less dangerous than line voltage to touch, but the risk is mis-wiring a terminal and sending voltage where the board isn’t designed to receive it, which turns a $200 repair into a $600 board replacement.

Linear boards are not forgiving in that respect. If the problem is inside the controller, or the symptom is intermittent, or you’re not 100% sure which wire does what, step back. The diagnostic part is where we earn our money honestly: we’ve chased wiring gremlins in Orlando neighborhoods for years and we know the failure patterns. Call (321) 465-7089 and we’ll walk you through what we’re seeing before anyone rolls a truck.
